FAQ: What happens when we have bad thoughts that make us feel like a bad person, and also during Nianfo?

As ordinary unenlightened beings, we are bound to have negative thoughts often in our daily life. One must realise that those thoughts are not us, not the True Self (Buddha nature). Although we create them with the mind, they don't represent our true essence. Hence, whatever thoughts we have, do not identify with them and be attached to them.

The most important point is to simply focus our mind on Amituofo (Amitabha Buddha) - Infinite Light and Life, reminding ourselves of the Buddha nature in us and all beings. As our practice deepens, our mindfulness will grow, and we can quickly transform negative thoughts into the Name of Amitabha Buddha. We will no longer be trapped or tricked by our volatile negative thoughts and emotions (which are like illusions and temporary). Just like the clouds in the sky, they will come and go. If one is not attached to them or identifies with them, one will not be trapped by illusions.
