FAQ: If there is no soul (no separate self) then what migrates to the Pure Land?
Although the ultimate truth is that there is no individual separate self (soul), one cannot easily say that unless one has realized perfect enlightenment (Buddhahood). Even enlightened beings like arhats and Bodhisattvas still have separation, what does that say about us ordinary unenlightened beings? As ordinary unenlightened beings, we tend to grasp at this false illusional self (soul/consciousness). Hence, it is our consciousness that migrates to the Pure Land, more specifically, it is our alaya consciousness (store-house consciousness which stores all memories from all past lives) that will migrate to the Pure Land. And we will know all our past lives when we are in the Pure Land. Amituofo.
