Rebirth of Yu Chang of the Tang Dynasty
Yu Chang, his hometown is unknown. During the reign of Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty, he served as a "Recorder" (official document scribe) in Bing Zhou (modern-day Hebei). By day, he handled official judicial matters, while at night, he would judge the cases in the underworld. He was often aware of disasters and misfortunes in advance and would quietly take preventive measures, continuing this way for six years. After the passing of his mother, he made it his daily practice to recite the Diamond Sutra, ending his role as an official in the underworld. At the age of eighty-four, as he was about to pass away, he suddenly smelled an extraordinary fragrance and hastily told those around him, "The sages from the Western Pure Land have come to receive me!" Then, he turned toward the West, continuously reciting Amitabha Buddha's name, and attained rebirth. (Record of Karmic Retribution)
