FAQ: How come one can attain rebirth in the Pure Land at the time of death even for ten recitations or one recitation?

This is due to Amitabha Buddha’s great vows (48 Great Vows), particularly the 18th vow, which says for beings in the ten directions, if one hears my Name, joyously and sincerely believe and vow to be born in my Land, even for ten recitations, they can be born (All Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have vows about how they will save sentient beings before they realise Buddhahood. And because Amitabha Buddha has realised Buddhahood, hence, his vows are realised and definitely real).

The ten recitations mean at the time of death (see the Amitabha Sutra). If one’s faith is very sincere and even one recitation at the time of death one can attain rebirth in the Pure Land. Of course, when we are at the time of death, we should try to recite Amitabha Buddha’s Name as many times as possible, as we don’t know the exact time of our departure. So, one should continuously recite the Name of Amitabha Buddha at the time of death and one will definitely see Amitabha Buddha and attain rebirth in the Pure Land successfully. Amituofo.
